NMF through the years...
Founded in Hudson, Wisconsin by Mark Lightfoot in 1987, Northern Metal Fab has been providing quality metal fabrication services for over thirty years. NMF had its humble beginnings working out of the historic railroad car repair shops in North Hudson, WI.
First built in 1872, and then rebuilt after a fire in 1890, the red brick buildings housed the many workers that built and repaired the rail road cars for the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway.
NMF shared walls with the with another fledging manufacturing startup, Mike Shaver's Hudson Machine & Tool (now ironically located in Hammond Wisconsin), still a prominent NMF vendor today, and also a rare shop dedicated to the restoration of vintage Bugatti cars.
Between collaborations with Hudson Machine on boutique recreations of Bugatti parts, NMF began doing welding repair with a portable diesel powered welder mounted on the back of a converted milk truck, fabrication and installation of custom built horse stalls, and building custom boat docks which Mark would tow into place with his personally restored house boat on the nearby scenic St. Croix River.
Through strong word of mouth for their high quality work, NMF was afforded the opportunity to provide large custom gravity based water filtration tanks to Tonka Equipment Company of Plymouth Minnesota.
By working closely with Tonka, audacious investments in early CNC plasma cutting technology, and utilizing every square foot of their small facility, NMF developed some of Tonka's first Simul-Wash, UTS, and Dualator treatment systems.
Thanks to the strengths of Tonka's designs, their sales grew rapidly, and NMF quickly outgrew their small facility.
Looking east, they found a 5 acre plot in the newly established industrial park in Baldwin Wisconsin. NMF erected a brand new 18,000 square foot production facility complete with a 20 ton, a 10 ton, and two 5 ton overhead cranes, a large blast and paint booth.
